GEMMOLOGY
Gemmology is the scientific study of gemstones. Identifying gemstones, testing methods, cutting and polishing synthetically manufactured gems, grading and uprising. Gemmologist study the quality characteristics and value of gemstones, jewellery do the handiwork required to produce a piece of jewellery . In jewellery identification is the key element of the business.
Candidates who have qualified 10+2 or equivalent from a recognized educational institution can apply for degree or diploma or certificate course in gemmology. The qualifications for research in the field are degrees in geology , chemistry and physics. The NIFT( National Institute of Fashion Technology) offers intensive diploma program in accessory designing that include jewellery designing. Indian Institute of Gemmology (IIG, Delhi) offers various courses in gemmology. Gemmology and Jewellery design is a profession with immense potential.
